Why wear a mouth-guard?

The Academy of Sport Dentistry (2005) recommends wearing a mouth-guard for the following reasons:

  • Mouth-guards prevent over 200,000 injuries each year in soccer alone.
  • Almost one-third of all dental injuries are due to sports-related accident.
  • An athlete is 70 times more likely to sustain damage to teeth when not wearing a mouth-guard.
  • A mouth guard can also help prevent concussion, cerebral hemorrhages, and incident of unconsciousness, jaw fractures and neck injuries.
  • Most youths wear a helmet or knee protectors; the mouth guard also belongs with protection equipment.

A custom made laminate mouth guard is micron accurate and can provide 10 times more protection than a boil & bite mouth guard (bought outside a dental office).
